"Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees, takes off his shoes - The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries."
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Southern Sierra Nevadas, ~13,000 feet

Into these words I pour the memories stemming from my lucky and blessed days in the Sierra Nevada and all that I know rings true: granite, sun, wind, altitude, water pure and perfect and the occasionally goofy comaraderie I share with friends and family. And some other stuff besides...
I love this quote and, not that I don't trust you, I actually googled it to see if it really WAS a quote by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It is....which proves, I suppose, that your writing is approaching sacred heights :) Speaking of Ms. Browning, there's a great story about her asking her future husband, the poet Robert Browning, what he meant by a particular phrase in one of his poems. After a long pause, he replied, "When I wrote that Miss Barrett, only God and Robert Browning knew what it meant. Now only God knows."
ReplyDeleteI just like the part about plucking blackberries!
